2027 General Surgery Coding Updates

New Hernia Repair Codes, Emerging Procedures and Bundling Changes

General Surgery receives several meaningful CPT® updates for 2027, including a significant expansion of diaphragmatic hernia reporting. Nine new codes introduce more specific reporting options for traumatic and nontraumatic repairs performed through open, laparoscopic and thoracoscopic approaches.

The expanded code structure makes operative documentation increasingly important. Coders must be able to identify the type of hernia, underlying circumstances, surgical approach and other procedural details needed to select the correct code.
